Early streamer emission (ESE) lightning protection systems are a type of lightning protection system that uses a specialized lightning rod called an early streamer emitter. The ESE rod is designed to detect and intercept lightning strikes at a higher altitude than traditional lightning rods, by emitting a streamer earlier than the natural streamer of the thunderstorm cloud.

ESE systems work by creating an ionized path for the lightning to follow to the ground, which allows the lightning to strike the ESE rod instead of the structure it is protecting. The ESE rod is typically taller than the structure it is protecting and it contains a sensor that detects the ionization of the air that occurs before a lightning strike. When the sensor detects this ionization, it activates the ESE rod which creates an ionized path for the lightning strike to follow to the ground.

ESE lightning protection systems are often used on tall structures or buildings where the risk of lightning strikes is higher, such as telecommunications towers, wind turbines, and high-rise buildings.
