An ESE Lightning Arrester (also known as an ESE terminal) is installed at the highest point of a structure to attract lightning strikes and conduct them safely to the ground.
Unlike traditional lightning rods (Franklin rods), ESE arresters emit an early upward streamer, increasing the protective area radius around the structure.
🛠️ How It WorksStorm Detection: The device detects the electric field buildup in the atmosphere during a thunderstorm.
Early Upward Leader: It emits an early upward streamer (usually microseconds before a natural leader from the structure).
Interception: This streamer meets the downward leader from the cloud and forms a conductive path.
Current Discharge: The lightning current is safely discharged to the ground through a down conductor and grounding system.
The protection radius RRR of an ESE terminal depends on:
ΔT (advance time) — how much earlier it emits the streamer than a standard rod (measured in microseconds)
Height (h) of the ESE terminal above the area to be protected
Typical protection radius ranges from 30 to 120 meters depending on model and mounting height.
✅ AdvantagesCovers larger areas than conventional rods
Cost-effective for large installations (less material, fewer rods)
Faster activation = better interception
Suitable for buildings, towers, refineries, monuments, stadiums, and open areas
